Helping Familites Help Students Succeed in Reading
In November of 2002, Florida Human Resources Development, Inc.
conducted a statewide survey to determine collaborative efforts
between adult education agencies and secondary schools in Florida.
The findings of that survey formed the basis for interventions that
were offered through this adult education program.
Schools that were selected as pilot sites used strategies that
are inclusive of the family unit in the overall education of the
secondary student. These strategies showed the necessity of including
the family as an integral part of a secondary school student's educational
program. Sample strategies used include:
Parents:
- Support shared time for family reading (oral or silent). Television
and other forms of entertainment are turned off during this period.
- Encourage family discussion of personally chosen reading material.
- Parents will have the greatest impact on children's reading
habits if they model effective behavior themselves.
- Parents who are in need of literacy services are supported to
acquire reading/ESOL skills.
Schools and adult education centers can:
- Enlist parent support and involvement in the success of their
high school age child
- Educate parents to understand the effect of improved fluency
on comprehension and vocabulary development and understanding
of the impact repeated reading strategy has on fluency development.
- Help parents understand the study skills and specific comprehension
strategies their high school age children are expected to apply
to reading selections.
- Enroll parents in adult ABE and/or ESOL classes to improve basic
skills.
